In Memento Mori, Gabriel, still posing as Xavier, watches from a distance as Octavia and Diyoza strategize on how to find The Old Man. After noticing that Octavia's hand is damaged after being exposed to the temporal flare, Gabriel joins them and offers to help. On their way to retrieve a cure for Octavia, he tells Diyoza that The Old Man is actually Gabriel. He explains that Gabriel had a moral awakening and decided to turn against the Primes. He asks Diyoza to join their cause, but Diyoza refuses because she has an offer to raise her baby in Sanctum. He says that Diyoza's child would be treated as a "Null" since she won't have the black blood. However, Diyoza does not change her mind.
After retrieving the tree sap which is supposed to be the cure, it fails to work on Octavia. Instead Octavia's arm starts spiraling. After noticing the pattern, Gabriel gives her a rock to let the hand draw freely on the ground. She draws a logarithmic spiral, which he recognizes as the shape of the Anomaly where the temporal flare came from. He says that the temporal flare was a message for Octavia that the Anomaly is calling her. After revealing that he has a similar spiral too, Diyoza also confirms the Anomaly call by showing her book full of spirals. They agree to go together to the Anomaly.
In The Old Man and the Anomaly, Gabriel, still posing as Xavier, takes Octavia and Diyoza to the Anomaly. As they get close, he takes them to his secret hiding place to disarm before they go to the Anomaly. In the room, there's a photo of Josephine. After seeing the Mind Drive scar on the back of his neck, Diyoza realizes that Xavier is in fact Gabriel himself in a new host. Gabriel admits it and says that he only has the Mind Drive because he has no one to remove it. He explains to them how he had trained Eduardo to remove the Mind Drive but Eduardo betrayed him by bringing him back through Xavier as a host. Since then, he's been posing as Xavier and letting his own Children of Gabriel think that he abandoned them.
After coming clean to them, Gabriel leads Diyoza and Octavia to the Anomaly to cure Octavia and figure out why the Anomaly is calling Diyoza. On the way, Gabriel keeps getting hallucinations in which he sees Josephine. At the Anomaly, Diyoza sees a vision of her future daughter, Hope. When Diyoza tries to follow Hope, Gabriel cautions her against it because no one has ever returned after entering the Anomaly. However, Diyoza goes against Gabriel and Octavia's warnings and enters into the Anomaly. When Octavia gets close to the Anomaly, Gabriel pulls her out. As they lie side by side, Gabriel looks at Octavia's arm, confirming that she's been healed.
In What You Take With You, Gabriel takes Octavia back to the Verge from the Anomaly where Octavia insists that she doesn't remember anything and points out that she was only in the Anomaly for a few seconds. However, as Octavia returned clean and healed, Gabriel thinks it was probably much longer. She had also come out at a run as if Octavia had been running from something. Gabriel decides to use red sun toxin to help Octavia remember.
After awakening, Octavia tells Gabriel that now she has a renewal of purpose and prepares to take off, only to hear a message from Clarke stating that she is the host of Josephine Lightbourne. Gabriel warns that it means that Clarke is in trouble, which Octavia realizes means all of her friends are in trouble too. Before she can take off to help them, Gabriel reminds Octavia that Clarke's message said that she was coming to them and states that things are about to get weirder.
In Matryoshka, Clarke and Josephine watch a memory of Gabriel and Josephine dancing after their respective first resurrections. Josephine watches the memory in fondness and promises to love Gabriel forever. Instead of floating the memory, Clarke tells Josephine that she can keep it, but they have to move if she wants to survive to see Gabriel again.
In the present, Gabriel and Octavia find Clarke's body at the old blind Gabriel and Josephine spent time at together. The two save her from the vines, and Josephine reveals herself to be in control, reunited with Gabriel for the first time in 70 years. However, the reunion is interrupted by the arrival of Jade and five Sanctum guards to whom Josephine reveals Gabriel's identity, ordering his capture and the execution of Octavia. However, Josephine's condition gets worse and Gabriel insists that he must operate immediately if he is to save her and Clarke. One of the guards suddenly shoots the others and reveals himself to be Octavia's brother Bellamy. Bellamy sends Jade back to Sanctum with a warning for Russell, and Gabriel leads the group back to the Verge.
At the Verge, Gabriel explains that he must temporarily stop Clarke's heart in order to get Josephine to download back into her Mind Drive so that it can be removed. While Bellamy wants to trade it to Russell, Josephine recognizes that Gabriel doesn't want that, as it will mean another resurrection could take another innocent life. Josephine tearfully begs Gabriel to save her so that they can be together for good, but Gabriel, in tears himself, stops Clarke's heart and removes the Mind Drive. However, Gabriel can't revive Clarke as Josephine's mind managed to hang on inside of her. Gabriel believes that it's over and Clarke's body just can't handle the strain of holding two minds anymore. Bellamy desperately tries to revive Clarke despite Gabriel's beliefs, and she suddenly regains consciousness in Bellamy's arms. Sorrowfully, Gabriel watches as Josephine's brain wave pattern flatlines on his EEG, her mind having been destroyed by Clarke.
In Ashes to Ashes, Gabriel works with Clarke, Bellamy and Octavia to try to come up with a plan to save their friends and defeat the Primes. Gabriel urges Bellamy to forgive Octavia and reveals her experiences with the anomaly. When the Children of Gabriel arrive, Gabriel reveals his true identity to them, to the anger of Layla, Xavier's sister. Clarke convinces Gabriel's followers to spare him so that Gabriel can help them weaponize Red Sun toxin to invade Sanctum.
While Octavia and Bellamy are gone, Gabriel and Clarke discuss their plans for using the toxin against Sanctum, with Gabriel expressing reluctance to harm the citizens. As they discuss the toxin further, Clarke and Gabriel come up with a plan to use a lesser dose to simulate a Red Sun eclipse to trigger Sanctum's evacuation alarms so as to spare as many innocent people as possible. As Gabriel no longer knows the code to lower the radiation shield, Clarke discusses posing as Josephine to infiltrate Sanctum and do it herself so that they can launch their attack.
Soon after Octavia and Bellamy return with the toxin, Sanctum guards led by Jade and John Murphy attack. Clarke poses as Josephine to them, claiming that Clarke is really dead. Once they are out of the tent, Clarke pretends to kill Layla and releases her friends to continue with their plan. After seeing Clarke's actions, Layla finally accepts that Clarke really isn't Josephine anymore.
In Adjustment Protocol, Gabriel waits outside of the radiation shield with Bellamy, Octavia and the Children of Gabriel for Clarke to take it down. However, they witness two Sanctum guards discussing an upcoming Naming Day ceremony with multiple Primes. Unwilling to wait and allow Russell to kill more people, Gabriel crosses through the shield and attacks the guard who stayed behind, taking his outfit and motorcycle. In Sanctum, Gabriel releases the Red Sun toxin in the water even though it's too early and surrenders to Sanctum guards, who recognize him. Gabriel is brought before Russell and confronts his old friend over his actions, only to learn that Russell has already resurrected the other Primes. As the Red Sun alarms go off, Russell realizes what Gabriel did and calms the crowd. Gabriel is able to overpower his guards and holds Russell at gunpoint, but can't bring himself to kill him. When more guards arrive, Gabriel surrenders reluctantly rather than shoot Russell when he has the chance.
Gabriel is tied to a chair while the resurrected Primes are brought in. As Russell introduces Murphy and Emori to the resurrected Mason family, Gabriel notices the two holding hands and realizes that they aren't Daniel and Kaylee Lee, informing the two that the Lee's are siblings. After Bellamy forces Priya Desai to admit the truth about the Primes and their hosts, Russell enacts the Adjustment Protocol and releases a massive amount of Red Sun toxin upon the Sanctumites, causing them to go insane and attack each other.
In the midst of the chaos, Simone is revealed to have been resurrected in the host of Abigail Griffin. Gabriel states to "Josephine" that "your mother murdered her mother. Ironic don't you think?" Clarke slaps Gabriel and orders him not to speak to her, asking how "she" could ever love such a traitor, to cover her grief over her mother's death. Simone buys the act and states that "Josephine" at least has closure now in regards to Gabriel. As the Primes prepare to depart for Eligius IV, Russell says goodbye to Gabriel and announces that Sanctum is now Gabriel's, though he suspects that Gabriel won't last very long.
In The Blood of Sanctum, a few members of the Children of Gabriel as well Octavia, Bellamy and Echo are captured by Sanctum believers. A female adjuster kills Layla just as Murphy and Emori enter to try to stop the process and take Bellamy, Echo and Octavia with them into the palace. As the believers realize that Russell Lightbourne and his family have left Sanctum, they start to attack again while the Children of Gabriel are still captured in the tavern.
In the palace Bellamy, Gabriel and Octavia find Jordan in a strange state due the fact that also Jordan had to drink the blood of Sanctum drug. Gabriel asks who will help him to release his captured group. Initially nobody wants to help - only Octavia offers to follow and tries to save the Children of Gabriel group. This allows the others to follow him.
Murphy, pretending to be Daniel Lee, agrees to act as decoy and bring Gabriel to the Sanctum believers for the adjustment procedure. Even after the adjustor Tory sees Gabriel take the Blood of Sanctum, she remains suspicious, walks outside and locks all of the others into the tavern. While Gabriel and Murphy control the inside - Bellamy, Octavia and Echo are fighting against all believers outside and try to stop them from burning down the tavern. Only a risky defense action from Octavia finally stops Tory from setting the tavern on fire.
Gabriel discovers a new tattoo on Octavia's back - Anomaly hieroglyphics, most in black a few in red color - proving that Octavia was much longer in the anomaly than just a few seconds. Gabriel, Octavia, Bellamy and Echo go back to the C.O.G. main camp, where Gabriel shows them the Anomaly Stone hidden under the floor - here Gabriel with Octavia touches all the red symbols they found on Octavia's back. The Anomaly expands rapidly while Octavia hears a person coming closer - it is Hope Diyoza, the young adult daughter of Charmaine Diyoza.
After stabbing Octavia with a knife, Hope falls unconscious into Gabriel's arms. Octavia vanishes into green dust, leaving Bellamy horrified and alone.

Recovering Colin's Memory Drive, Gabriel leads them back to the cabin to review his friend's memories for information. When Gabriel removes a Mind Drive from his computer tablet, Echo realizes that it belongs to Josephine Lightbourne and Gabriel explains that he had to be sure that Josephine was really gone. After his computer fixes some corruption on the Memory Drive, Gabriel is surprised to see that the recording starts with Becca Franco who he had a crush on. Becca expresses envy for Colin's chance to explore Skyring, preferring Planet Beta over Russell Lightbourne's choice of Alpha due to finding time dilation "sexy as hell". Gabriel realizes from Becca's comments that the five Eligius III worlds are in close proximity to a black hole though Skyring is further out, explaining why time passes faster on Skyring than on Sanctum or the other worlds. Gabriel suspects that the presence of the Anomaly on two of the worlds chosen for the mission is not a coincidence and suggests that Bardo is another of the Eligius III colony worlds, the Disciples are the descendants of another of the mission teams that settled that world and that the race that created the Anomaly were also searching for a new home as the Anomaly would've provided them the perfect means to search without having to use spaceships or cryo like the people from Earth had to do.
Fascinated by Colin's Memory Drive, Gabriel becomes engrossed in studying his friend's research as Echo and Hope leave him to it. When Echo returns, Gabriel reveals that he has learned that unlike Mission Team Alpha, Mission Team Beta, aside from Colin, died when their transport ship crashed on Skyring, preventing the creation of a colony there. Colin discovered the Anomaly Stone and began studying it, attempting to figure out the code to activate it. Gabriel is convinced that if anyone could figure out the code on their own, it would be Colin who was an award-winning quantum physicist. Gabriel is confused by Colin's recitation of a poem each day as he goes to work, but finds a memory of Colin succeeding and the Anomaly, too deep underwater to dive to under normal circumstances, expanding onto the nearby shore. Leaving his computer behind, Gabriel rushes outside to alert Hope and Echo of his discovery, but when they return to write down the code, they discover that Orlando has found Gabriel's computer. Having gone insane from the isolation, Orlando destroys the computer, preventing Gabriel, Echo and Hope from getting the code from Colin's Memory Drive.
In Welcome to Bardo, Gabriel appears in a flashback to when Octavia returns to Sanctum through the Anomaly from Bardo.
In the present, Gabriel, Hope and Echo arrive on Bardo, cloaked using the Disciples' armor. After the three Disciples in the Anomaly Stone room are killed, Gabriel chides Echo, only to learn that the killer was Hope instead. Hope explains that without Orlando they don't need to take unnecessary risks, but Gabriel argues that leaving Orlando was the unnecessary risk and stops Echo from stabbing the men to ensure that they are dead. Gabriel reminds Echo and Hope that they only have 30 minutes to get to the cell block, get their people and get back to the Anomaly Stone room before shift change. However, they need to hurry as with Orlando opening the doors in their five years of practice, the best that they ever managed was 28 minutes. Gabriel points out that they need an inside man to succeed, but Hope and Echo believe that they have that in Levitt, the man who helped Hope and Octavia before and who will be in M-Cap.
As they reach M-Cap, the group is interrupted by Disciples heading to one of Anders' sermons who simply believe that Gabriel, Echo and Hope are running late. As Hope sneaks off in an attempt to assassinate Anders, Gabriel is shocked when Anders mentions that the Shepherd delievered the Disciples to Bardo using the Anomaly Stone. Gabriel explains to Echo that this means that the Disciples are not from Eligius III but instead came from Earth itself through the Anomaly. Echo talks Hope down from trying to kill Anders and the three depart once the sermon is over.
Returning to M-Cap, Gabriel, Hope and Echo discover Octavia hooked up to the machine and another scientist named Kirsch manning M-Cap instead of Levitt. Echo forces Kirsch to show them Bellamy's apparent death a week before during a failed attempt to rescue Octavia. As alarms go off since the Disciples now know the group is there, a grief-stricken and enraged Echo kills Kirsch despite Gabriel and Hope's protests that they need him as a hostage. As Echo screams in grief, Hope states that they will never find her mother now.
In The Queen's Gambit, Anders reveals Orlando's suicide to Gabriel and allows Gabriel to say a few words over his body before its sent to Nakara. Anders expresses surprise at the amount of things that Orlando apparently didn't tell the group and requests Gabriel's help with deciphering the Anomaly Stone, combining his 150 years of study with the Disciples' nearly a thousand years of work. Gabriel ultimately agrees.
Three months later, Gabriel is frustrated by the lack of success and is told that their last breakthrough was before the Disciple he is talking to is born. Clarke, Jordan, Niylah, Raven and Miller arrive through the Anomaly and Clarke is surprised to see Gabriel amongst the code-breaking team. Gabriel assures Clarke that Echo and Octavia are okay but informs her of Bellamy's apparent death.
In Anaconda, when Bill Cadogan arrives, Clarke allows the other Disciples to leave the room, but Gabriel stays. When Cadogan asks if his daughter is in the Key, Gabriel explains that the Key and the Flame, which Gabriel claims is in Clarke's head, are the same thing. Clarke later has him open the door so that Octavia, Echo and Diyoza can enter.
In The Flock, in a flashback to three months prior, Anders shows Octavia, Diyoza and Hope Bardo's poisonous surface and they realize that Gabriel saved them by preventing the group from going to the surface. When they ask where Gabriel is, Anders brushes off the question, stating only that Gabriel is no longer any of their concern.
In Etherea, Clarke and her friends have been given Cadogan's quarters despite the murder of Anders and their other actions due to their control over the Flame. Sitting at the table with Gabriel, Echo and Octavia, Clarke acknowledges that if the Disciples didn't believe that she has the Flame, they would be in cells. Heading for the door, Clarke states that she is going to wake the others as it's time to go back to Sanctum, but Gabriel reminds her that they are under house arrest. Aware of that fact along with the fact that their leverage will disappear the moment that she's put in front of the Anomaly Stone, Clarke announces that she's going to offer to do it as soon as the rest of her friends are safely back on Sanctum. Octavia points out that the Disciples will kill Clarke once they know the truth and Echo refuses to let Clarke sacrifice herself for them.
The door opens and Cadogan enters escorted by Doucette and armed Disciples. Clarke starts to make her offer to Cadogan, only to have him usher in a still-alive Bellamy, much to the group's shock and pleasure. The Disciples prevent Octavia from approaching Bellamy and Echo questions how it's possible since they saw him die. Octavia comments that "it's hard to keep the Blakes down" and Clarke pulls Bellamy into a hug which Cadogan allows since she has the Key. Under cover of the hug, Clarke whispers into Bellamy's ear that the Key is the Flame and that the Disciples believe that it's still in her head and orders him to say nothing. As Clarke breaks the hug, Cadogan expresses hope that Clarke is now willing to help them, stating that too much blood has already been spilled and each death is a child of Earth who won't transcend. Cadogan begins leaving to give them time to reunite while the Disciples make preparations but, to Clarke, Octavia, Echo and Gabriel's shock, Bellamy, who is now completely loyal to the Disciple cause, reveals that Clarke doesn't have the Flame and that it has been destroyed, negating Clarke's group's leverage over the Disciples.
In The Stranger, Cadogan paces around the Anomaly Stone while lamenting to Gabriel that they were so close. Gabriel starts to express understanding for how upset Cadogan is and Cadogan reminds him that the Disciples are now back to square one and randomly entering codes and accuses Gabriel of telling him that Clarke had the Key. Gabriel points out that it was actually Octavia's memories that did that and the Disciples simply didn't see when the Flame was removed from Clarke's head. Cadogan is still angry with Gabriel as Gabriel let Cadogan believe that it was still in Clarke's head. Their discussion is interrupted by the arrival of Bellamy and Gabriel comments that Bellamy looks good in white. Cadogan orders Gabriel locked up with the others and he is led away to a prison cell.
Later, after Clarke makes a deal to trade the release of her friends for leading Cadogan to the Flame, he sends everyone but Clarke, Raven and Gabriel through the Anomaly before suddenly shutting it down in order to ensure that Clarke keeps her part of the deal. Raven realizes that Cadogan didn't send them to Sanctum which Cadogan confirms and thanks Raven for demonstrating why he didn't send her with them. Gabriel explains that both he and Raven know how the Anomaly Stone works which is why Cadogan couldn't send them too. Cadogan states that Clarke's friends are safe as he promised they would be, but points out that he'd never said anything about releasing them on Sanctum. Cadogan intends to use Clarke's friends as leverage to ensure that Clarke keeps up her part of the deal and once he has the Flame and the Last War begins, they will be freed at which point each of them will be welcome to fight alongside the Disciples. Cadogan promises that even if they choose not to, the Disciples will still save them anyway. Listening to Cadogan's speech, Raven and Gabriel exchange a look.
Clarke, Cadogan, Bellamy, Doucette, Raven and Gabriel travel through the Anomaly back to Sanctum protected by Disciple helmets and are shocked by the carnage that they find waiting for them.
In Blood Giant, Gabriel approaches Sheidheda, wondering what is going on. The Dark Commander demands to know who Gabriel is and Clarke realizes that it isn't Russell. Otis introduces Sheidheda and Raven comments that they now know where his code went. The Dark Commander demands that everyone either kneel or die, but Cadogan informs him that while he normally would relish the opportunity to recruit Sheidheda's forces to the cause, he has neither the time nor the patience to do so at the moment.
On Cadogan's signal, cloaked Disciples kill the Dark Commander's Wonkru guards, allowing Raven, Indra and Clarke to rush to help the tied-up Murphy. Murphy comments that he can accept invisibility and ray guns, but he needs an explanation for Bellamy's new status. Clarke asks if Madi is safe with Gaia, only to learn that everyone else had thought that Gaia was with her. Murphy reassures Clarke that Madi is safe for now and Cadogan orders Indra restrained with Sheidheda against everyone's wishes. Cadogan points out that Indra was standing by the throne and states that the only reason she isn't dead is that she was unarmed. Sheidheda charges Cadogan, but a still-cloaked Disciple stabs him in the gut. Cadogan has a Disciple bring the palace's microphone over and the the Dark Commander that his wound is deep and Cadogan has no interest in removing Sheidheda from his throne. Cadogan proposes that the Dark Commander gives him undisturbed passage to get what he came for, meaning that Cadogan sees not a single soul on their path and in exchange, Cadogan will leave Gabriel there to treat him. Once the Disciples are gone, Sheidheda is free to "continue the debasement of our species" until he is saved along with the rest of humanity once Cadogan completes his quest although the other option is for the Dark Commander to die. With Sheidheda agreeing, Cadogan orders the others that it's time to go after the Flame.
Sheidheda and Indra are tied to a pillar together while Gabriel treats his wounds. Gabriel warns the Dark Commander that if the blade hit his kidney, there's not much that Gabriel can do for him and he doubts that the Disciples will take Sheidheda back to Bardo for treatment. Indra is pleased, commenting that its time that they let the Dark Commander find out what death is like for a second time. The Dark Commander jokes that Indra will miss him when he's gone and reassures Gabriel that Russell's death was quick. As Gabriel continues, a hallucination of Josephine appears to Gabriel. Gabriel is shocked to see Josephine who states that he doesn't look happy to see her again. Gabriel immediately becomes worried and Josephine orders him not to tell the Disciples and lie that they need bandages for her father's last body so that they can be alone. Instead, Gabriel warns the Disciples that they need the anti-toxin as Josephine's appearance means that a Red Sun Eclipse is starting. Looking at Josephine, Gabriel tells the Dark Commander and Indra that he knows because Gabriel is already feeling the effects.
Traveling to the lab, Gabriel is shocked by the state of the bones of the Primes' previous hosts which Josephine comments on. Gabriel experiences flashbacks of using Brooke to resurrect Josephine and checks the cabinet for anti-toxin while Eric Jackson asks Gabriel about Miller. Although confused about who Jackson means, Gabriel tells Jackson that Miller is fine, although he isn't on Sanctum and calls what happened a long story that they don't have time to discuss. Gabriel finds only a single dose of anti-toxin and Jackson explains that the Primes had used it in order to escape to space. With all of the ingredients present, Gabriel tells Jackson that they can make more and gives Jackson the anti-toxin. Jackson refuses it since its the only dose and he doesn't know how to make more, but after looking at Josephine, Gabriel states that he's used to working under the toxin's influence while Jackson is not and Gabriel really needs his help. Jackson takes the anti-toxin and Gabriel begins giving him instructions on how to make more. A pleased Josephine tells Gabriel that she missed him too and Gabriel orders Josephine to be quiet, confusing Jackson with his strange behavior.
As Jackson works, Josephine urges Gabriel to allow everyone else to tear each other to pieces while they retrieve the Flame. Josephine reminds Gabriel that he is a Nightblood and so can put the Flame in his head and save humanity. She points out that she wouldn't be thinking it if he wasn't and that both the Flame and the Mind Drives were created by Becca Franko and as a result, they can repair the code, drawing his attention to the computer used to fix Memory Drives, but Gabriel points out that they use different connections. Josephine reminds Gabriel of all that he has accomplished with the Mind Drives and is sure that he can rig Eligius technology to fix the Flame and solve the mystery of the Anomaly Stone. Although Gabriel is reluctant to do it for Cadogan, Josephine suggests that he do it for himself instead and that its the best way to make up for all of the things that he did to save her. Josephine reminds Gabriel that they came across the stars to save the human race and states that now is his chance.
Returning to the Great Hall, Gabriel and Jackson find the aftermath of Indra's slaughter of the Disciples and Josephine comments that they missed all of the fun. Indra chooses not to kill the Dark Commander as repayment for saving her life but to instead leave him to die of his wounds. Indra orders Jackson and Gabriel not to treat Sheidheda and both state that they weren't planning on it.
When Cadogan arrives, Gabriel asks if he has the Flame which he confirms. Josephine urges Gabriel to tell him Cadogan and Gabriel reveals that he believes that he can restore the Flame's damaged code using the Eligius computer. Gabriel explains that the computer is used to repair Memory Drives, stitching together broken strings of code, code that was created by Becca who also created the Flame. Cadogan hands Gabriel the Flame and as he hesitates, Josephine encourages him. Plugging the Flame into the computer, Gabriel tells Cadogan that if Becca's memories are still inside of the Flame, the computer will find them. The computer successfully begins repairing the Flame's code and Josephine tells Gabriel to volunteer since Cadogan will need a Nightblood host. Hesitating, Gabriel changes his mind about going through with it. Stating that humanity is the problem and apologizing, Gabriel draws a gun from his waistband and shoots the Flame, destroying it for good.
Turning his gun on Cadogan, Gabriel orders the Disciples to drop their weapons and remove their helmets. As they comply, Gabriel has Jackson give him the anti-toxin, causing Josephine's hallucination to disappear as she pleads with him not to do it as Gabriel needs her. Bellamy tells Gabriel that they need Cadogan to get their friends back, Echo and Hope too. While Gabriel is distracted by Bellamy, Doucette attempts to attack him, but he is shot and killed by Clarke.
